How To Find The Best Teen Treatment

The goal is to help your child heal and live a life full of purpose, success, and happiness. Any treatment program that you are looking into should offer a loving and therapeutic space where they can heal, recover, catch up on their academic studies, and correct any and all destructive habits that have been getting in the way of their success. It is crucial to find a teen treatment center that supports you and your child’s care, so we suggest to keep an open-mind to potential inpatient programs that may be outside of your state and/or immediate area while also keeping an open mind on length of stay. Having your child out of the home is tough and the commitment to a residential program is not easy, but you need to remember the sacrifices are worth the result; this is about your child’s life and well-being.

Location, Location, Location

It seems logical to send your child to a teen treatment program that is close to home, but we strongly suggest you look into programs outside your location. Your teen has most likely been struggling for a while now and that can create a lot of stress and emotional sickness within the home. You, your family, and your teen need space apart to breathe, heal, and each focus on their own health and well-being. Sending your child out-of-state for care can offer a greater opportunity of recovery long after they have graduated from their program. In our experience simply getting a struggling teen out of a space where they have been suffering from can provide the best opportunity to truly heal. Another reason we suggest not attending a program close to home is so that your child will be less tempted to run away, try to contact negative peer influences, or manipulate the family into allowing them to come home too early. Remember that you have gone through this journey with them and so you need time and space to heal as well. Attending a therapeutic program out-of-state will help to provide your teen with the opportunity to learn new skills, explore hidden talents, and build healthy relationships with friends, family and with themselves.

Length of Stay

There are different kinds of therapeutic programs for teens, but we suggest a treatment center that offers a longer-term stay; a minimum of 90 days to upwards of a year. We understand that this may seem like a long time, but in the big picture of trying to help your child heal their mind and body, it’s such a short amount of time spent on a life-long change for the better. Your teen is suffering and they deserve the opportunity to not only heal, but build a strong foundation so that they may go on to live full purposeful and happy lives. True healing and change takes time, dedication, and effort. It would be unrealistic and unfair to expect your child to become the best version of themselves in only a few short weeks or months, so we strongly suggest that you choose a program that is not only residential, but longer than 3 months. You will save yourself and your child time, unnecessary pain, and even more struggles in the future by committing to the best approach from the start.

Insurance and Cost

Most commercial insurance companies can help offset cost of care, but that still leaves you with the fear of what it will cost you. The key is finding out what programs your insurance will cover, how long they will cover for, and what your out-of-pocket costs might be. A good therapeutic program will help you navigate your healthcare coverage and even advocate for your child’s care. When calling programs that interest you, have your insurance information ready. This way you will know right away if they take your insurance and then you can make an educated decision on your teen’s care. We know that the cost of care can in many cases seem overwhelming and unattainable, but there are ways to navigate costs of treatment so do not base your decision on cost alone. Like college, this is an investment into your child’s health and future and should be treated just as important if not more.
