You want a program that not only treats the whole person and cares for your child as if they were one of their own; you want one that treats and heals your family as well.
There may be some teen treatment programs for mental health issues in Maryland, but that does not always mean these are the only and best treatment options for your child. When deciding on an adolescent treatment program you will want to factor in the location and how it can help aid in your loved one’s recovery. There are a few reasons sending your teen to an out-of-state treatment center could benefit the whole family. The biggest benefit is that it removes your teen from an unhealthy environment, negative peer influences, and the risk of running away. Sometimes the distance alone is enough to help change your child’s perspective on life and adopt new ideas and beliefs that will help foster a new attitude towards the rest of their life.
Length of stay actually matters. Short term programs (commonly 30-60 days in length) are great for those stepping down from a long-term program, but do not truly provide the level and length of care needed for a teen to change their entire life. Your child has been struggling and they need time to heal, grow, learn, and adapt to a new way of coping and behaving; new ways of thinking, processing, and acting. The minimum stay we would recommend from our years of treating teens and their families would be at least 3 months, but if you are able to do 6-12 months, then that would be best.

We know this process can be overwhelming and so we want to make sure we guide you in the best direction possible in order to find the best care. One way to do this is to contact your insurance company directly and have them explain your coverage and benefits. In addition, we suggest you contact the treatment centers that you are interested in to find out what insurance plans they accept. Having health insurance coverage opens the door to more opportunities, but we strongly urge you to do your research and not solely rely on your insurance company to provide the best options for you and your child.
