Therapeutic Boarding Schools for Troubled Teens from Florida, located in Montana

In addition to its paradise-like beaches and sunshine, Florida has been labeled the “recovery capital of the world.” It’s a title awarded for its abundance of substance abuse and mental health services. However, statistics show that 70,000 opioid-related deaths have occurred since 2017.
Although there are numerous short-term residential mental health facilities in the state, locating quality mental and behavioral health care for teens is nearly impossible to find quality cognitive and behavioral health facilities for teens.
Teenage delinquency, substance abuse, and general mental and behavioral struggles are just looming around the corner. Therefore, parents must recognize the warning signs of delinquency, substance abuse, or mental and behavioral struggles and take the necessary steps to get help before it’s too late. Turning Winds is a hybrid residential treatment program located in Montana that combines some of the finest elements from therapeutic boarding schools and wilderness therapy to create a powerful treatment experience. How to Identify the Best Mental Health Facility for Your Teen

When it comes to your teen, you know there are more complex factors affecting teens during adolescence than is apparent.  Aside from their typical struggles with mental and behavioral issues, they also have their studies, graduation, careers, social standing, and subsequent future to worry about.

The complexity of the issues they are experiencing and the fact that these aren’t always noticeable immediately make it difficult for parents to know precisely what specific treatment a teen needs, which in turn makes the search for proper treatment even more difficult for parents.

Then there are many other factors to consider when choosing treatment: the program’s length, quality, location, transportation costs, insurance coverage, and treatment costs. It is essential that parents overwhelmed by the process remain focused and not lose sight of what is important – to give their child an opportunity to heal, recover, and live life to the fullest.

When choosing a long-term residential mental health facility, consider essential factors such as location, length of stay, and comprehensive treatment plan offered by the residential treatment facility.  These elements will be the key to determining the program best suited for your child.

Where Should You Enroll Your Struggling Teen?

Too often, parents look for rehab centers close to home, which can hinder a child’s treatment. Although being near your child seems like an excellent way to offer support and stay connected through frequent visits.  Sending a teenager away far from home is most effective in recovery.  The distance helps the teenager grow self-reliance and resilience and helps the teen create space from their problems allowing them to be more open to treatment.

We understand that this might be difficult for most parents and often results in anxiety and worry for some parents. Sending their teen away seems inconceivable.  We sympathize with that. However, opting for an out-of-state, long-term residential mental health facility allows your teen the time to heal away from harmful factors; they meet other teens that they can relate to and experience a change in perspective. The distance helps them focus on their recovery without familiar distractions.

The bottom line is that location matters. Removing your child from an unhealthy environment where negative peers, influences, and bad habits have impacted and controlled their decision-making can and will have a huge impact on the progress and success of their rehabilitation.

An essential part of treatment is encouraging your teen to try different activities, like skiing, hiking, and camping, which can open them up to various therapeutic benefits. Such activities often catalyze learning new skills, discovering unknown talents, and establishing new habits and coping mechanisms.

Environment plays a significant role in your teen’s recovery and healing. Children struggling with behavioral and emotional issues benefit from a natural environment that fosters growth, healing, and learning; while being supported by a caring staff that treats your child like one of their own family.

How Long Do They Need to Stay?

There are a variety of teen rehab programs to choose from. There is your run-on-the-mill, short-term program that only lasts from 30 up to 60 days. There are also intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP). However, these levels of care are more beneficial after attending a longer-term inpatient residential treatment.

Short-term programs are not very effective, as the name implies. A short stay is not long enough for your child to make effective changes. Short-term programs are designed as a stabilizing treatment post-crisis, like when a teen has been in a hospital or mental facility due to a self-harming attempt or total breakdown.

Since 2002, Turning Winds have worked with thousands of teens who joined us here in the enchanting wilderness of Western Montana. In our many years of experience helping families and caring for teens, we have discovered and learned that a child’s best chance for success is a long-term inpatient treatment program.

It is imperative that a child stays at a program well beyond the typical, short-term thirty-day stint. Ideally, in our care, it takes anywhere from 6-12 months for a child to truly change, heal, and recover –up to a year after removing your teens from their stressful environment and triggers. Anything less than 90 days is just a band-aid solution for an even bigger, more complex health issue.

The length of time spent in a residential treatment center can seriously impact your teen’s long-term recovery and future.

What is the Cost of Enrolling a Teen in a Residential Mental Health Facility?

When discussing insurance and costs, there are many questions to ask. What insurance covers treatment? How much will health care insurance cover, and for how long? What will they cover first, and what treatment options are covered later?

At Turning Winds, we understand that parents of struggling teenagers need assistance finding the best care and support for their child. Our knowledgeable staff is here to help with insurance verification, determine the specific treatment your child needs, and how your insurance provider can help cover the costs. Our experienced staff will expertly guide you through the entire admissions process and during treatment.

In our experience, parents don’t consider long-term residential mental health facilities because they do not know how it works and are discouraged and worried by the cost.  Fear of the financial strain treatment might cause. Fear of costs should not be why your loved one’s health and stability worsen. Here at Turning Winds, we can help you draft a financial payment plan that we can adjust with each unique case. Let us help you make the journey to healing and recovery much easier.
