How To Find The Best Teen Treatment

Your Goal

Your aim is to nurture your child’s behavioral, mental, and emotional well-being, and to facilitate their healing process while establishing a base for a life of purpose, happiness, and success. Finding a program that aligns with this objective is crucial, and considering a long-term residential program out-of-state could be instrumental in realizing this goal.

Location, Location, Location

We recognize that the decision to seek treatment for your child is deeply personal and can be incredibly challenging. You may believe that a facility closer to home, in the richly resourced state like California, might be the best choice. However, it is important to consider that proximity does not always promise the most effective healing environment.

Our approach is built on the understanding that sometimes, a significant physical and emotional distance from familiar, yet potentially detrimental surroundings is a powerful catalyst for change. The influences of local peers, dynamics within the home, or a stressful school environment can often impede recovery. By choosing Turning Winds, you’re not simply sending your child away; you’re opening a door to an opportunity—a place uniquely tailored to foster growth and healing.

Envision this not as a separation, but as an essential pause, granting your family space to breathe, to reflect, and to grow individually. It’s an interlude where your teen can discover new passions, talents, and perspectives, all under the guidance of compassionate professionals who are dedicated to their well-being.

Embracing treatment out of state isn’t just about location—it’s about transformation. In the of Turning Winds, your child will be introduced to a world of new experiences, surrounded by peers on similar journeys, and supported by mentors who understand the value of fresh starts and new beginnings. This change in environment is more than a backdrop; it’s an integral part of the healing journey, providing the distance necessary to view life’s challenges through a new lens.

Length of Stay

Navigating the landscape of treatment programs for a struggling youth requires a thoughtful analysis of their needs and the different levels of care available. Outpatient services in California might offer sone support, but they typically leave the child in their unchanged environment, which can limit the effectiveness of the intervention. The child’s day-to-day life remains the same, with the addition of sporadic therapeutic sessions. However, for meaningful and enduring change, this may not suffice.

Short-term inpatient programs present an alternative, offering more intensive care over a period of one to three months. Many families find these appealing, particularly when costs are partly covered by insurance. However,  it’s critical to question whether a brief intervention is sufficient for lasting healing or if it’s simply a pause in the child’s struggles.

Long-term programs, with durations from six months to a year, offer a deeper, more comprehensive approach. In such settings, there’s a robust focus on overall development, including behavioral, mental, emotional health, and academic progress. The immersive experience in a long-term program provides the child with the time, space, and resources to undergo significant personal growth, equipping them with the skills and resilience needed to thrive beyond the program’s confines. When considering the best path forward, it is vital to weigh the benefits of a sustained and immersive therapeutic environment against shorter, potentially less transformative options.

Insurance and Cost

You may have insurance that can cover some costs, so it is beneficial to find out what kind of coverage you have for your child and what type of care is covered. Whatever treatment you pursue, a quality treatment program will help verify insurance and advocate the best care for your child along the way. Most insurance companies will not pay for the entire length of stay for a long-term program over 90 days, but that does not mean you should limit your child’s stay. There are a variety of ways to finance long-term care for your loved one so be sure to explore all options and speak with the program for guidance and direction. Don’t let cost dictate finding the best possible placement and care for your loved one; going beyond just insurance and paying out of pocket costs for the best program now will be more cost effective in the long run and can save your child from months or even years of further struggle and suffering while also potentially eliminating the need for further treatment, the risk of legal consequences, or the pain and trauma  within a family.
