How To Find The Best Teen Treatment

Your Goal

Your goal is to help your child heal and recover from behavioral and mental health issues. To do this, it is important for your teen to attend a treatment program that will support this goal; a program that provides quality care and has a proven track record of successfully helping kids recover and reunite with their families.

Location, Location, Location

There are many kinds of treatment programs in the state of Washington, but that does not always mean these are the best program options for your teen. In many cases, attending a treatment program near you can actually be more harmful than helpful to the long-term recovery goals for your child. There is a greater risk for your child to run away from treatment because they know the area and/or could reach out to negative peers to help them. When a child is completely removed from their environment and comfort zone they are forced in a positive way to grow mentally and emotionally. This allows them to learn and experience new ideas, beliefs, and coping mechanisms that will be crucial for their recovery and future success. Additionally, getting your teen out of the local environment gives all those who have been affected the chance to rest, heal, and attend to other matters of their lives that have perhaps gone neglected. Going to treatment out of state can also give a fresh new perspective on life which coincides with supporting their healing and health.

Length of Stay

Sometimes thirty days is simply not enough. Many parents even start by sending their child to an out-patient program in hopes that this will help fix their problems, only to discover that their child is worse than they were before. This is because healing and change of behavior takes time. Maybe changing a bad habit in 30 days is enough, but we are talking about the complete change of a teen’s perspective, beliefs, and behavior that did not develop overnight. This is a serious change which requires a more serious level of care. If your child was suffering from a life threatening physical illness you would not choose the cheapest, shortest, most convenient stay of care, rather you would do whatever it took to get them into the best possible program to help them. Struggling with behavioral and mental health disorders and/or substance abuse issues can be life-threatening too and so it should be treated equally as such. Your child deserves the opportunity to fully heal and recover.

Insurance and Cost

It is beneficial to find out what kind of insurance coverage you have for your teen and what type of care is covered under your plan. Whatever treatment you decide on, a quality teen treatment program should help not only verify insurance, but also advocate the best care for your child during the process. Most private insurance providers will not pay for the entire length of stay for a program over 90 days, but that does not mean you should limit your child’s treatment plan. There are a variety of ways to help offset costs for long-term care, so make sure that you explore all your options. A good treatment program will help you navigate this process and guide you in the best direction. Do not let cost dictate the best care for your teen. They deserve the true opportunity to get better.
