How To Find The Best Teen Treatment

Your Goal

Whether your child is struggling with mental, behavioral, and/or substance abuse issues, a quality teen mental health program should be able to provide care for all these issues. Recovery is a process and it takes time; time to break bad habits and build new healthy ones, time to rebuild self-esteem and self-worth, time to discover new talents and hobbies, while also taking time to rebuild grades and work on academic studies important for their success now and in the future. Your main mission is to find the best treatment program that offers the best care for your teen’s struggles to help them long-term so that they don’t have to continue to suffer, whether they recognize they are right now or not.

Location, Location, Location

Turning Winds has helped thousands of teens and their families from across the United States heal, rebuild, and recover long-term. In our many years of service, we have found that location actually does matter when it comes to life-long successful results. To give an example, the Turning Winds campus is located on 150 acres in the majestic Rocky Mountains of Montana. We have witnessed first-hand what nature has done for our teens and it’s nothing short of miraculous. It is understandable that sending your kid away to an out-of-state program can be overwhelming and emotional, but we encourage you to look at the benefits that this type of experience can truly offer your child. The ability to learn new skills, build healthier habits, and discover new talents and hobbies all are important factors when treating any kind of mental and behavioral health issues. This is not just about going away for a short period of time and expecting your loved one to change their entire life only to watch them come back home feeling overwhelmed and defeated once again. Rather, this is about true life changes and the ability to become the best version of yourself that you can be and going out-of-state to a program that fosters these experiences and removes negative local environment factors and influences (peer group, family tensions, etc) will help you do just that.

Length of Stay

From our many years of experience, we strongly suggest a teen program that provides a minimum stay of 3 months. Anything less could actually cause more harm than good to your child’s overall long-term care; often times after a short term program a child returns home and regresses because they did not have adequate time and opportunity to work on their issues and develop the desired life skills and tools. We know this because we have helped many teens who had first attended a short-term treatment program only to find themselves right back where they first started and in some cases worse off. The reality is that the longer your teen has the opportunity to work on themselves, rebuild their self-self-worth and esteem, develop new and healthy habits, and work on their academics and grades, the better chance they will have at living a life beyond their wildest dreams; a life that they are excited about and proud of, a life they were meant to live.

Insurance and Cost

Some insurance companies may cover some of the treatment costs, but it is important to know that an excellent treatment program will not only help you navigate your coverage, but will strongly advocate for the best care for your child. If you are attending a program longer than a short-term 30 some odd day program then you can expect that there will be some out-of-pocket expenses. Do not let that be the deciding factor when choosing your teen’s treatment plan. This is a long-term investment into their life and future and should be treated as such. Turning Winds has helped many families navigate costs and provided information and resources to help cover out of pocket expenses.
